 The action of the film takes place during Holy Week, around 1900, in Romania. The tense relationship between the Jewish innkeeper Leiba and his servant Gheorghe reaches a climax that leads to their separation. Proud and violent, Gheorghe promises Leiba revenge on Easter night. Gheorghe's threat, set against the anti-Semitic backdrop of the Romanian village in the early 20th century, unsettles Leiba. His psychological unraveling transforms him from victim to aggressor.
