About

The founding triad, Zöld Lajos, Gaál András and Márton Árpád have decided since the first years: “The Lăzarea art colony should be an open window to the world, it shall become the cross-section of the contemporary Romanian arts, by accepting and honoring all styles and trends.[…] Everyone paints, draws and carves whatever they wish at Lăzarea.“. An interesting coincidence was, that Gaál András stated after the very first closure in 1974: “we invite and accept visual artists only“.

Until 1988, when the colony was shut down by the communist regime, our collection had 616 items, which is still expanding. Today, we have 2117 pieces. Another interesting aspect of this collection is, that it is still whole, no pieces have ever been taken away, as it happend to the collections of many other art colonies throughout the country.

The events in december 1989 ushered a new era in Romania. Culture, as other aspects of life have changed dramatically. In the first half of the nineties, the Romanian artists’ society has been polarized by the new environment and media, and thus, they could leave behind the restrictions imposed by the former communist regime, benefiting from the support of various cultural organizations.

In the second half of the nineties, Romania began to see the appearance of international festivals, and contemporary artistic biennals, which at the start of the new century have grown quickly in numbers. The 1998 camp, lead by the Túlsó P’Art artist group was the major change in the camp’s concept. There are no more monolithic blocks, such as oriental and occidental. The globalization takes over, changing the occidental art, making it more sensitive to innovation. The drawback of this is, for the artists on the periphery, that they have to be vary for the ways which can bring them to attention. Those in the center have a lot more chance to become famous. For a lively organization, however, if it doesn’t concentrate on one era and it doesn’t think retrospectively, being aware of every change is a must. It is very important to cite the very eloquent statement of Erőss István: “Removing the local vs. universal, the hierarchical relation between periphery and center, from the context of this colony, and to become part of the international community, is only possible with carefully and patiently built relations”. In the past ten years, we had many European and far-eastern artist participating on the Korkép colony – boasting complete style liberty – organized by Siklódi Zsolt and Erős István. Many Transylvanian artists are invited to events abroad.

A new milestone has been reached by the colony in 2014. Administration changed, and the ownership of the castle which was the home of the colony, has been returned to its former owners as a result of court orders. Due to these changes and the lack of consensus, the camp had to leave the castle, but activity kept going on. Despite setbacks, in the period of 2014-2017, our collection grew with another 177 pieces.

Keeping the openness imagined by the founders, and which became a local brand, we accepted a rich multitude of styles and trends. We are working on organizing cultural and contemporary art events, concentrating on medial and conceptual styles.

About Via Transilvanica Via Transilvanica, the "road that unites", is a 1,400 kilometer long distance trail, a tourist route that crosses Romania diagonally from Putna to Drobeta Turnu Severin. It's designed for hiking, cycling and horse riding. Via Transilvanica is marked with painted markers, signposts and at every kilometer, there is an individually carved andesite stone, therefore all these milestones can probably become the longest art gallery in the world, which accompanies travelers along the way. The trail crosses ten counties (administrative units of the country): Suceava, Bistrița-Năsăud, Mureș, Harghita, Sibiu, Brașov, Alba, Hunedoara, Caraș-Severin and Mehedinți and is divided into seven cultural-historical regions: Bucovina, Highlands, Terra Siculorum, Terra Saxonum, Terra Dacica, Terra Banatica, Terra Romana. In total, Via Transilvanica crosses 107 administrative-territorial units in Romania, and highlights the natural and cultural heritage of each region. Via Transilvanica is a long-distance trail inspired by the history of other such trails in Europe, North America and beyond. But above all, it is a social project, so the focus is on the community. The project aims to bring to light places in the country, seemingly forgotten by the world and largely depopulated due to economic limitations, and bring them to life. This revival is due to the backpackers who, after a long day on the trails, expect a minimum of hospitality and at least one welcoming face to share stories with. This is what the road that unites is all about.

MCC's activities in Transylvania bring together more than 2000 students in 8 locations and 4 educational programs. In the academic year 2023/2024, the Young Talent Program had 545 students, the High School Program had 1406 members, the University Program had 114 students and 19 young people studied in the Transylvanian School of Politics. The organisation started its activity in 1996 with only a few students, but from the 2000s onwards the training possibilities gradually expanded and it has been present in several places outside Hungary, in the Carpathian Basin. Today it offers training opportunities for all ages: primary school, secondary school, university and beyond. The Transylvanian High School Program was launched in 2013 in Cluj-Napoca and Odorheiu Secuiesc, the Kolozsvár/ Cluj University Program started in 2018, and the Primary School Program in 2020, teaching financial awareness, health and conflict management and other skills from the fifth grade onwards. The organisation's Transylvanian administrative centre is in Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca), the hometown of King Matthias. The Collegium supports all young people, regardless of their financial, social and cultural background, who are curious about the world, want to be educated and informed, and in the long run want to become useful members of society in their local communities, among Hungarians in Transylvania and in the wider Carpathian Basin. The MCC supports young people who want to useful in their local communities, who feel responsibility for their environment, so that they can develop their talents and use them for the benefit of themselves and, in the long run, for the benefit of society. MCC is neither a competitor nor an alternative to public educational institutions, it is independent of them, but its courses help students to perform better in the traditional educational system. We believe in the importance of learning from the best teachers, so that young people can become open to the world, familiar with international processes, and at the same time represent values and attitudes that are forward-looking for the future of the Hungarian people of the Carpathian Basin and for the future of Europe as a whole.
