Borsec is a historic spa resort located at an altitude of 900 m, nestled among the Giurgeu, Bistrița and Călimani Mountains, with a remarkable history spanning more than 300 years. Its naturally carbonated mineral waters have been appreciated since the 18th century and were later exported to Vienna and beyond. Borsec has won numerous international awards, including the title of Queen of Mineral Waters, but the resort is much more than an internationally renowned brand.
This thematic route offers an experience that starts from one of the area's most important natural resources - the mineral water springs - putting visitors into the historical context of Borsec's development and culminating with some of the most beautiful natural and panoramic landmarks in the area.
Tentative programme
10:00-10:30 - Meeting at the Borsec Tourist Information Centre
We meet at Borsec Tourist Information Centre, where we can collect informative materials about the resort, and then head towards 7 Springs (7 Izvoare) Boulevard, the resort's main pedestrian avenue. During the first half hour, we will place Borsec on the geographical map of the area, explaining the geological origins of its carbonated mineral waters, travertine deposits and mofettas. This is also when we have our first mineral water tasting, learning about the beginnings of mineral water bottling and its therapeutic properties.
10:40-11:00 - Central Park, Main Springs, Elisabeta Spring, Melik Hotel
At this stop, we explore the spa culture reflected in the architecture typical of luxury resorts of the late 19th century and the interwar period, while observing how the entire urban ensemble developed within this remarkable mountain setting. An optional visit to the Local Exhibition is also available, offering further insight into the resort's past through its collection of historical objects.
11:15 - Kossuth Spring
The mineral water springs are not simply water extraction points, but an integral part of the resort's spa heritage. Here we reach the most beautiful spring pavilion, Kossuth Spring, where we taste the naturally carbonated water from one of the accessible sources.
11:20-12:00 - Fairy Glade (Poiana Zânelor)
Fairy Glade welcomes us with a wonderful panoramic view, the legends of Borsec, a therapeutic walking path and the opportunity to experience a traditional mineral-water foot bath.
12:00-13:00 - Natural attractions
The natural attractions now take centre stage. Picturesque paths lead us towards Bear Cave and the Ice Cave, while along the way we enjoy the view of a natural amphitheatre created by former travertine quarrying.
