Vocal-Symphonic Concert – Zoltán Szalay: Ballad

On October 4, 2026, Csíkszereda will host the world premiere of Zoltán Szalay’s Ballad – In Memory of Béla Bartók, a large-scale work for orchestra, mixed choir, four folk singers and a folk violin soloist.

Inspired by different versions of the traditional Moldavian ballad The Cruel Mother, the piece brings together the world of archaic Moldavian folk ballads and contemporary classical music. The work also pays tribute to Béla Bartók, on the 145th anniversary of his birth, and Zoltán Kallós, whose 100th birth anniversary is celebrated this year.

The performance will feature musicians and choir members of the Hungarian Opera of Cluj, the Csíki Chamber Orchestra and the Lux Aurumque Chamber Choir, alongside renowned folk singers and a folk violin soloist.
